Thread Works by Priscilla Jones

UK-based artist, Priscilla Jones, is a contemporary 2D & 3D mixed media artist with degrees in Embroidery. Her works focus on found materials reminiscence of her childhood and her sewing experience. Since she is an avid recycler, she primarily uses vintage fabric and other recycled materials. Her colour scheme is light and the mood is rather carefree and full of the celebration of life, particularly teatime.

She’s been a collector all of her life in that she has a substantial number of found/purchased objects at her home, which becomes her inspiration and influences her style. For example, she often gazes at her collections and receives inspiration putting them together or incorporating them with fabrics, wire, and other things, similar to how Picasso worked.

As for the additional materials, she uses wire, emulsion paint, wax, fabric, leather, rayon threads, crochet silks and vintage haberdashery, including buttons, lace and zips.  For the sewing project, she uses machine embroidery and hand sewing. http://www.textileartist.org/priscilla-jones-narrow-groove/

This piece is one of her tea series, perhaps taken from her collection. The seams are not tucked in and left as the way they are. Nevertheless, those seemingly inperfectionistic characteristics are the most charming part of her works. It has an impression of carefreeness, an image of warm summer afternoon. This is quite an enchanting piece.  She sells her pieces as fine arts; however, they are a good fit for illustration as well.  I like the fact the title of this piece is part of the whole plan. Without it, the picture does not appear complete.

She seems very fond of the kitchen theme and related subjects.  Her kitchen utensils are quite lively looking with charming personalities. There isn’t any application of personification on the utensils, however, they seem as if they are living entities.  Each stitch is totally unaligned, almost resembling a child’s drawing.  Because of this, it could be said that a child probably did it. Yet by paying attention to her treatment on careful composition and colour scheme, it can be said this is produced by a professional artist.

Her pieces are some of my favourites for they are depicting ordinarily objects, perhaps a big part of her personal life, but they also seem very appealing. She does an excellent job balancing the all-over high key value. In addition, the line quality is the strength of her pieces.

Her works are relevant to my practice, because of my interest in this medium, textile. Learning from her random stitches as well as the placement of fabric are particularly useful for my practice.
